Just part of our meal at a Dong Bei Ren restaurant in Shanghai- this
food is supposedly typical of the north-eastern former Manchurian
region of China. Check out the size of those lamb shanks (juxtaposed
by the tofu and rocket rolls ordered by my vegetarian self!). Try
eating that with chopsticks!

Phil took this picture (on his phone) while on a photo shoot in a cane furniture factory in Guangzhou (southern China). There is not a single machine in the whole factory as all the furniture is made by hand. And yes, her hands are blurry because in every shot she is working too fast for the camera.

Spring has sprung! It has been unseasonably warm these last few days
(the temperature jumped 10 degrees overnight), putting a bounce in my
step. It's all just a big tease though-the weather report predicts
another cold snap is on the way. My Aussie butt is not designed for
the cold!

you not. Yummy!

Many major intersections in Shanghai are fenced, forcing all
pedestrians to climb over them on these pedestrian bridges. This is a
great idea to cut down on pedestrian casulties, however many of the
bridges (such as this on on Yanan Rd and Jiangsu Rd) do not have
escalators. This poses a major problem for anyone with disabilities,
or even just parents with prams. It's a great example of a good idea
that just wasn't followed through logically.

Todays photo is not one I took- it was sent to me by my sister and is
of my newest nephew Darcy. Out of my eight nieces and nephews, four of
them have been born while I was living here in Shanghai. There are
many positive aspects to living in a foreign country but missing such
momentous occasions as births, deaths and marriages definitely sucks!

Just one of many hundreds of "authorised apple resellers" (read:
pirated hacked/cracked iPod and iPhone sellers) in Shanghai.

Fireworks on the eve of Chinese New Year. We all know what pretty
fireworks displays look like, but this is the true scene on the ground
as Shanghai turns into a hell of pyrotechnics.

Walls like this are being rapidly built around Shanghai to "beautify"
construction site that won't be completed before the expo. This wall
is titled the "expo long scenery wall".

Since the water in Shanghai (as in all of China) is so bad, all our
water for drinking and cooking comes from this water dispenser. At
least the big bottles only cost about $3 each.

Cookie-cutter expat villas in a gated compound. With one month rent
costing the combined monthly salaries of myself and Phil, we couldn't
live here even if we wanted to!

Shopping in pyjamas- a common sight in china. These ones are
especially quilted for those cold winter days.

A foggy and miserable Sunday in Shanghai.

The window seat in our bedroom. We just bought the foam and got the

Some run down shops near our place were recently destroyed in order to
widen the road, and lo and behold this typical Shanghai house was
hiding behind them. Occasionally the demolishion here reveals
simething interesting.

Project 365, Day 32
Painting my livingroom. The painter we hired to do the job decided to
go back to his hometown for Chinese New Year so I'm painting it myself.
